I don't think you need to look like everyone, but often times certain cultural and tradiational values aren't accepted by others here as it would in other countries and perhaps that alienates people to only be around people like them. I personally don't feel like I'm accepted here as readily as perhaps a pale skinned protestant.
Yeah...you kinda do. Just like the hippies in the '70s had to decide whether to cut their hair or continue to be pointed out as being different; just like the punks with pink spiked hair and safety pins through their cheeks weren't accepted by everyone.
or perhaps you could move to Britain where being a hippie with long hair is considered normal in glasgow and having pink spiky hair is just the fad in Gloucester... But it'd be a pity for your country... Variety is the stuff of life you know... ;-p
Toodles,
exBrit in Indonesia, where the women are either all covered up (Aceh) or have nothing on them at all (Bali):-)
hi, meh i fink its juss the fact that people stand out too much in such a different way that they aren't as accepted as others, but yea.. u dunt mind if i use the picture for my assignment on belonging do u??
Please add your thoughts and comments to the cartoons. See what other people are saying and help to create more dialogue.
Who is Ninjabi?
Ninjabi comes from the combination of the terms “ninja” and “hijabi.” A hijabi is a Muslim girl that covers her hair. The term ninjabi is meant to be a fun way to refer to hijabis in the Muslim culture. The ninjabi in this editorial cartoon is a fusion of this and a Texan identity. She reflects the voice of many Muslims who have experienced discrimination and struggle with defining their identites post-9/11.
Currently the cartoon appears every Tuesday in the Daily Texan.
